The Skagway News had two of its writers earn prestigious awards at the recent Alaska Press Club conference in Anchorage. The top newspaper, radio and television outlets were honored for their work at the three-day event.
Kate Butler was honored with the “Best Short Feature” among small papers. Her article entitled “Local artist wins Van Zyle Endowment” took first place and drew high praise from the judges.
“Deep, personal look at the person’s struggles, challenges and dreams of making it as an artist in today’s wordl,” the judges penned. “Honestly, the headline kind of underplayed the depth of the story, but still a first-place entry.”
Former Skagway News publisher Gretchen Wehmhoff also claimed an award. She placed second in the Best Editorial or Commentary with her farewell message in the paper.
“In this touching and affectionate farewell, Gretchen Wehmhoff tours you around a friendly little town she loves. She paints it so vividly and effectively, lingers so lovingly on its little graces and fond memories, that, like her, when it’s time to go, you really don’t want to,” the judges wrote.
