The Skagway Police Department will begin training on its new drone program later this year, according to a note presented to Borough Manager Emily Deach for the borough meeting on March 19.
SPD officials said when the weather warms up, officers would begin training with the drones, which were donated recently by the City of Valdez on behalf of its police department. The drones will give law enforcement officers the ability to search remote areas where a traditional ground search would be hard to conduct.
With the drones, the police department will be able to expand its search and rescue operations in conjunction with the Skagway Fire Department. The drones, officers say, will also enable the police to assist with assessments from any natural disasters.
