Skagway Mayor Orion Hanson made it clear the State of Alaska is going to be lean this year. Extremely lean.
Speaking from the Alaska Municipal League’s Mayors Conference in Juneau, Hanson told members of the Skagway Borough Assembly on February 19 that the state’s budget would be very tight and for residents to not to expect much help.
“The state budget is pretty bleak,” he said. “It’s about break even. Don’t expect a lot of fluff in this budget.”
Hanson said the biggest issue surrounding the state’s budget was its reliance on the Permanent Fund Dividend as its largest source of income.
“The main source of revenue for the state is the interest off the Permanent Fund Dividend, and that’s been the case for a long time.”
The Municipality of Skagway is hoping there are funds for capital projects, including vitally important ports and harbor funds and rockslide mitigation.
