The Christmas season shifted into high gear on December 5 with the annual tree lighting ceremony in downtown Skagway.

The historic gold-rush town of Skagway welcomed the holiday season in style on Tuesday as the annual Yuletide Celebration began with a dazzling tree-lighting ceremony in the heart of downtown.

The iconic Douglas fir, adorned with beautifully-crafted ornaments and twinkling LED lights, was unveiled at the corner of Broadway and Main Street. A large crowd gathered to help ring in the holiday season.

“From the first gold seekers to today’s families and visitors, Skagway has always been a place where community spirit shines brightest,” one resident said. “Tonight, we light this tree to symbolize hope, warmth, and togetherness for the entire season.”

At 5:30 p.m., a single, bright flare ignited the wreath of lights, sending a cascade of golden illumination across the snowy streets.

The ceremony drew an eclectic mix of residents and tourists: Local families bundled in parkas and scarves, clutching hot cocoa, and gold-rush heritage enthusiasts touring the town’s historic district, many dressed in period-appropriate attire. Visitors from Fairbanks, Juneau, and beyond, many of whom traveled the scenic Skagway Railroad to experience the small-town charm.

As the night drew to a close, families drifted back to their cozy cabins, the lingering glow of the illuminated tree reflecting off the snowy rooftops—a promise that the spirit of the holidays will continue to shine bright throughout Skagway this winter.
