Assembly approves new loading zone in downtown

Assembly approves new loading zone in downtown

In an effort to improve tourist safety, the Skagway Borough Assembly approved the creation of a new loading zone in front of Skagway Brewing Company.

The zone, which had been requested by Skagway Brewing Company owner Mike Healy will create a safe space for tourists loading and unloading through the business hours.

“Buses dropping people off for tours can creat unsafe conditions when they lack a designated loading area,” Healy wrote to Borough manager Emily Deach.

The new loading zone will also improve access for visitors with mobility issues. The buses can park in the zone and disembark individuals in wheelchairs or other devices in a place easier for them to access.”

The Assembly agreed, approving the loading zone unanimously at its April 16 meeting.

“Maintaining clear access to the front entrance is important for ADA accessibility,” Healy wrote.

The loading zone, which is located directly in front of the business and extends toward the hardware store, will also benefit the business, creating safe parking areas for trucks delivering and unloading supplies. The elevator used in unloading supplies is just inside the fromt doors.
