State halts Cascade Point work until next year

Cascade Point’s evolution into one of the state’s main ferry terminals isn’t happening this year.

State officials announced on March 19 that it had halted plans to begin work on Phase I of the controversial project until next year. The delay stems issues obtaining permits.

The state had planned to begin work on the terminal infrastructure this summer, including the construction of an access road.

In announcing the delay, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities said that the agency needs more time to work on permitting due to changes by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps, according to DOT officials, wants “all design information” about both stages of the construction plam before moving forward.

The move came a week before DOT was set to host town halls about the project, which has sparked opposition from lawmakers, local officials and community members in Haines, Skagway and Juneau. Critics say the new terminal would complicate regional travel with its distance from Juneau.
