Author Mark McCord, a Sharon, Oklahoma native, and graduate of Sharon Mutual High School, announces the release of his novel, Skagway: An Alaskan Love Story, a sweeping, emotionally rich story set against the dramatic backdrop of Southeast Alaska’s most storied town. The idea for the book began with a single moment standing in Skagway’s downtown that McCord couldn’t shake.
Skagway begins with the arrival of Cal Stephenson, a former New Orleans police officer who is running from the tragedy of his past. On his first day in Skagway, he meets the quirky and effervescent Tabitha Clarke, who introduces him to the town’s history, culture and heritage. Along the way, he meets people like Noah Redbone and his granddaughter Nellie who along with Tabitha become a central part of his healing and who stoke his love for Skagway.
McCord’s writing blends emotional restraint with a deep respect for place, drawing on his decades of global work in international development. “Skagway is a place where history is alive,” McCord says. “I wanted to honor the people who carry that history forward—those who work the docks, guide visitors, protect the land, and keep the stories alive.”
The novel joins McCord’s growing body of work, which includes the memoir Some Stops Along the Way, the Mozart’s Ghost trilogy, Bellesco, and several upcoming titles. His books are known for their emotional clarity, sense of place, and commitment to portraying ordinary people with dignity and depth.
Skagway: An Alaskan Love Story is available on Amazon in paperback.
