There is a moment in every parent’s life — usually while fishing a toy out of a toilet or stepping on something sharp enough to qualify as medieval weaponry — when they ask themselves: Why is this my life?
If you are raising four boys, the answer is simple: because the universe has an exquisite sense of humor.
I used to be the kind of person who valued quiet. I liked gentle mornings, tidy corners and the ability to sit on a couch without first checking it for crumbs the size of building materials. Then I had boys. And then I had another boy. And then—somewhere between optimism and denial—I had two more.
My home is now less a residence and more a high-volume chaos manufacturing plant.
The boys wake up each morning with the raw energy of caffeinated squirrels. The day begins with a sound I’ve come to call The Morning Thud Parade — a series of stomps, crashes, and suspicious giggles that echo through the hall. They don’t walk. They charge. They don’t talk. They broadcast. They don’t play. They conduct experimental physics using my lamps as test subjects.
From breakfast to bedtime, the house maintains an ambient noise level comparable to a small airport. The boys debate everything—who gets the blue cup, who stole the blue cup, who used to own the blue cup in 2019. A team of international diplomats couldn’t mediate these disputes.
As for laundry, raising four boys means you have become the proud CEO of a textile refinery. I’ve stopped trying to understand how they generate so much clothing. Do they spontaneously molt? Do they change outfits like rugby players at halftime? Sometimes I wash the same sweatshirt three times in one day and no one can explain how.
Of course, I occasionally fantasize about a calmer home—one without Nerf darts in the chandelier or mystery stains that make me question my faith in humanity. But then I remember the flip side: the laughter, the roughhousing that somehow ends in a group hug, the way they defend each other to the ends of the earth, even if they argued 11 minutes earlier about a pencil.
Raising four boys isn’t gentle. It’s not tidy. It’s not peaceful.
It is loud, messy, wild — and somehow the most joyful adventure I could have been drafted into.
